What are peak hours for trains in Amsterdam? ›

We make a distinction between peak and off-peak hours: » Off-peak hours are between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., before 6:30 a.m. and after 6:30 p.m. On weekends and holidays, off-peak hours apply all day. » Peak hours are the hours between 6:30 and 9:00 a.m., and from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m., from Monday to Friday.

If you want to travel through the Netherlands by train, you need to buy a single-use chipcard or an anonymous OV-chipkaart (smart card). Traditional (paper) tickets no longer exist, although the single-use card could be considered as such.

Most of the travel products make the distinction between 'peak' and 'off-peak' travel periods. NS designates peak hours (spitsuren) to be Monday to Friday 0630-0900 and 1600-1830. Off-peak times (daluren) are 0900-1600 and 1830-0630 on weekdays plus all of the weekend and public holidays.

The off-peak hours are before 6:30 am, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm and after 6:30 pm. Valid all day on weekends, public holidays. Except on Koningsdag (April 27). Off-Peak Group Ticket is valid on the stated date, until 04.00 AM the next day.

Please arrive at the station at least 20 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Then, just look for your train on the departure board and scan your ticket to reach the platform. When the train arrives, hop on and find your seat.

Reservations are not needed (nor possible) for trips within the Netherlands, and unless you have a discount pass, you do not have to pay more to travel during peak times. When you travel back on the same day, it's easier to buy a return ticket (as opposed to two single tickets).

There are two main ways to pay while travelling by train in the Netherlands. You can either buy tickets online or from a ticket machine, or you can use your OV-chipkaart, or smartphone using OVPay. You can look up the NS Journey Planner to check timetables and plan your route.

All Intercity trains are equipped with toilets. Signs are provided on the walls to indicate the locations of the toilets.

The best time to visit the Netherlands is in June, or between September and November, when the leaves change and the foods and beers of the festive season emerge.

High Season in Amsterdam Summer months of April to September are considered to be high season for Amsterdam. A high influx of tourists start around the renowned Keukenhof Tulip Festival in mid April and goes on for the next few months. Weather during summers is pleasant with occasional heavy rain.

Advance reservations are made generally up to 120 days in advance for all classes and all trains. The period of advance reservation (ARP) is exclusive of the day of departure of the train.

Season tickets offer unlimited travel between 2 stations. If you make the same journey regularly, a Season ticket or Flexi Season ticket might be better value for money than daily tickets. Season tickets are available to buy weekly, monthly and annually – as well as any period from 1 month and 1 day up to 1 year.

Day Of Travel

Anytime Day Return tickets are valid for one return journey. The return portion is valid on the date shown on the ticket and until 04:29 the following morning.

Peak train times are generally between 06:30 and 09:30, and from 16:30 to 19:00. This is when the trains are busiest, with commuters travelling between work and home.

When can you travel? Outside rush hours. Rush hours are Monday to Friday, 07:00-09:00 and 16:00-18:30.

Schedule. The metro network opens every day at 6 am and closes at 12:30 am (midnight). The trains normally run every 10 minutes.

Trains run every 15 minutes or so to Amsterdam Central station between 6am and 12.30am and the night service runs once an hour right through the night. The airport shuttle operated by Connexxion runs every 10-30 minute from 06.00 to 23.00 and visits over 100 hotels around the city.
