London court to decide whether WikiLeaks founder Assange is extradited to the US

  • By BRIAN MELLEY - Associated Press

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assangefaces a court hearing in London that could end with him being sent to the U.S. to face espionage charges, or provide him another chance to appeal his extradition. The outcome Monday will depend on how much weight judges give to assurances U.S. officials have provided that Assange’s rights won’t be trampled if he goes on trial. In March, judges said he could take his case to the Court of Appeal unless the U.S. guaranteed he would not face the death penalty if extradited and would have the same free speech protections as a U.S. citizen. The U.S. has now provided those assurances.

Co-hosts from the Caribbean aiming to defy history and win a third Twenty20 World Cup title

  • By RIZWAN ALI - AP Sports Writer

West Indies needs to defy history to win the Twenty20 World Cup for a third time. No tournament host nation has won the title in the first eight editions. Sri Lanka went the closest by reaching the final in 2012 before losing to West Indies in Colombo. That win is widely remembered for the ‘Gangnam Style’ celebrations of the West Indies players. Four years later, the West Indies’ fearless brand of cricket set the Eden Gardens alight in India where Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes against Ben Stokes in the final over to steer the Caribbean team a second T20 World Cup title.

Nuggets blow 20-point lead, struggle from field as Timberwolves end their title defense in Game 7

  • By PAT GRAHAM - AP Sports Writer

The Denver Nuggets couldn’t quiet an epic second-half comeback by Minnesota or the noise emanating from a boisterous Timberwolves locker room. Just a loud and painful reminder that their reign as champions was finished. The young and confident Timberwolves came into Denver’s house and spoiled the party by eliminating the Nuggets with a 98-90 win Sunday night in Game 7 of their second-round series. Minnesota overcame a 20-point deficit to make the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2004. The Nuggets became the fifth straight reigning champion to fail to reach the conference finals in the season after their championship.

In Saudi Arabia, an all-women psychedelic rock band jams outs as its conservative society loosens up

  • By BARAA ANWER - Associated Press

As Saudi Arabia liberalizes some aspects of its society, an all-women psychedelic rock band that recently performed in the kingdom's capital is an example showing some Saudi women are now finding their voice through the arts. The band, Seera, blends traditional Arabic melodies with the resurgent psychedelia of bands like Tame Impala. Clear limits still remain on speech and any political activity in the tightly governed kingdom. But in the arts space, Saudi Arabia is slowly opening up, as could be seen by Seera’s show earlier this month in Riyadh’s Diriyah neighborhood.

The countdown campaign for the Aug 28-Sept. 8 Paralympic Games begins Monday with 100 days to go and features three athletes alone in an empty stadium. The campaign slogan: “Il ne me manque rien, sauf vous” (I’m not missing anything, except you) is a rallying call to get more people to watch them competing. Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, a hard-line diplomat, dies in helicopter crash

  • By JON GAMBRELL - Associated Press

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, a hard-liner close to the country’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard who confronted the West while also overseeing indirect talks with the U.S. over the country’s nuclear program, has died. State media said Monday that he died in the helicopter crash Sunday that also killed the country’s president. Amirabdollahian represented the hard-line shift in Iran after the collapse of Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers after then-U.S. President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from the accord. He served under President Ebrahim Raisi, a protégé of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and followed their policies. Amirabdollahian was 60.

Iran President Ebrahim Raisi, supreme leader's protégé, dies at 63 in helicopter crash

  • By JON GAMBRELL - Associated Press

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, a hard-line protégé of the country’s supreme leader who helped oversee the mass executions of thousands in 1988 and later led the country as it enriched uranium near weapons-grade levels and launched a major drone-and-missile attack on Israel, has died. He was 63. Raisi’s sudden death, along with Iran’s foreign minister and other officials in the helicopter crash Sunday in northwestern Iran, came as Iran struggles with internal dissent and its relations with the wider world. A cleric first, Raisi once kissed the Quran, the Islamic holy book, before the United Nations and spoke more like a preacher than a statesman when addressing the world.

India votes in fifth phase of election including in city where PM opened controversial Hindu temple

  • By PIYUSH NAGPAL and BISWAJEET BANERJEE - Associated Press

Millions of Indians across 49 constituencies are casting ballots as the country’s six-week-long election enters its final stages. Voting is also happening in northern Ayodhya city, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened a controversial Hindu temple on the site of a razed mosque. Modi’s party, which has hailed the opening of the temple as the ruling government’s crowning achievement, is hoping it will help catapult the prime minister to a record third successive term. The staggered election will run until June 1 before votes are counted on June 4. Almost 970 million voters are eligible to cast their ballots in this election, more than 10% of the world’s population.

After the only hospital in town closed, a North Carolina city directs its ire at politicians

  • By AMANDA SEITZ and ALLEN G. BREED - Associated Press

After one North Carolina city's only hospital closed, residents there say they're not only worried about their health but they've lost trust in politicians. Williamston, North Carolina's struggle to reopen its only emergency room could signal trouble for President Joe Biden's reelection campaign, which highlights his health care accomplishments. Biden and former President Donald Trump are fiercely competing for votes in the state, where residents of this town say they've lost confidence that politicians care about getting the hospital reopened. Meanwhile, county and state officials say they're working to get the hospital reopened as a standalone emergency room.

Nikki Haley faces a murky path forward and a key decision on whether or not to endorse Trump

  • By STEVE PEOPLES, MEG KINNARD and THOMAS BEAUMONT - Associated Press

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley's allies and opponents alike are awaiting her decision on whether to endorse Donald Trump. Her eventual move could shape not only this year's presidential race but her own political future. Haley will give her first public speech Wednesday since dropping out of the Republican primary. Some allies believe she may be forced to endorse the former president before the November election to avoid permanently alienating the Republican Party base. But her supporters say in interviews that they hope she won't give in and that they might not back her in the future if she does.

US pediatricians group reverses decades-old ban on breastfeeding for those with HIV

  • By JONEL ALECCIA - AP Health Writer

A top U.S. pediatricians’ group is making a sharp policy change about breastfeeding by people with HIV. The group says they can breastfeed as long as they are taking medications that effectively suppress the virus that causes AIDS. It’s a reversal in a longstanding policy from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The group made the changes on Monday, effectively overturning guidance that dated back decades. Experts say drugs used to treat HIV can reduce the risk of passing the virus to infants to less than 1%. About 5,000 people who have HIV give birth in the U.S. each year.

Stock market today: Asian stocks advance after Wall Street closes out another winning week

  • By ZIMO ZHONG - Associated Press

Asian stocks have advanced after U.S. stock indexes drifted near their records on Friday with the Dow Jones Industrial Average finishing above 40,000 for the first time. U.S. futures rose and oil prices climbed as investors focused on the Middle East, where a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other officials crashed in the mountainous northwest reaches of Iran on Sunday. Chinese shares rose after the government announced fresh measures to support the struggling property sector. The S&P 500, which is much more widely followed on Wall Street, added 0.1%. The Nasdaq composite slipped 0.1%. Treasury yields ticked higher in the bond market.

Sour Patch Kids Oreos? Peeps Pepsi? What's behind the weird flavors popping up on store shelves

  • By DEE-ANN DURBIN - AP Business Writer

Surprising flavor combinations – think gravy-flavored Jones Soda or Sour Patch Kids Oreos -- are showing up more frequently in grocery stores and restaurants. Earlier this year, IHOP and Lay’s introduced Rooty Tooty Fresh ’N Fruity potato chips, which were designed to taste like strawberry-topped pancakes with a hint of bacon. Last summer, there were mustard-flavored Skittles. While it’s tempting to pass off these limited-time flavors as social media stunts, experts say there’s more to the story. Food companies are responding to the changing and expanding tastes of consumers while also trying to keep brands relevant and distinct to win space on crowded store shelves.

Many remember solid economy under Trump, but his record also full of tax cut hype, debt and disease

  • By JOSH BOAK - Associated Press

Numbers show that the economy during Donald Trump’s presidency has never lived up to his own hype. But polling shows Americans are more confident about his economic leadership than that of President Joe Biden. The question of who can best steer the U.S. economy could be a deciding factor in who wins November’s presidential election. Trump boasts about the economy under his watch, but going through the numbers shows the complicated reality of his economic leadership. His tax cuts never delivered the promised growth. His budget deficits surged and then stayed relatively high under Biden. And there was the recession-causing pandemic, an event that caused historic job losses as well as low inflation.

Ship that caused deadly Baltimore bridge collapse to be refloated and moved

  • AP

The container ship that caused the deadly collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge is scheduled to be refloated and moved to a nearby marine terminal. The Dali has remained at the collapse site since it lost power and crashed into one of the bridge’s supporting columns in March. The disaster killed six construction workers and snarled traffic into Baltimore Harbor. Authorities say high tide Monday morning is expected to yield the best conditions for crews to start refloating and transit work on the ship. Up to five tugboats will escort the Dali on its 2.5-mile path to the marine terminal.

Michael Cohen to face more grilling as Trump's hush money trial enters its final stretch

  • By MICHAEL R. SISAK, JENNIFER PELTZ, JAKE OFFENHARTZ and ALANNA DURKIN RICHER - Associated Press

Donald Trump’s hush money trial is heading into the final stretch, with prosecutors’ last and star witness expected back on the stand for more grilling before the former president’s lawyers get their chance to put on a case. The landmark trial will kick back off Monday in Manhattan with more defense cross-examination of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen. Cohen's pivotal testimony directly tied Trump to the alleged hush money scheme. Defense lawyers are trying to paint Cohen as a serial fabulist who is on a revenge campaign against the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. Trump has pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing.

As the sun rose Monday, rescuers saw the helicopter from a distance of some 1.25 miles, the head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society told state media. Footage released by the IRNA showed what the agency described as the crash site, across a steep valley in a green mountain range. Shortly after, state TV in an on-screen scrolling text said: “There is no sign of life from people on board.”
