Last week, the U-46 Board of Education announced the new Board Officers who will begin serving in these roles immediately. Melissa Owens was selected as the new Board President, Kate Thommes will serve as Vice President, and Chanda Schwartz will serve as Secretary Pro-Tem. Sue Kerr will continue to serve as a Board member. Ms. Kerr led the BOE for five years as Board president, during which she demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication, especially during challenging times. Her leadership during a global pandemic, the selection of a new superintendent, and a bond proposal have been invaluable to the U-46 community. Thank you, Ms. Kerr, for your remarkable service.

To wrap up Teacher Appreciation Week 2024, we have one more surprise visit to share. Back in March, Washington Elementary’s Cindie Cortinas-Vogt was named the SHAPE America 2024 National Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year. The Washington Elementary community organized a surprise celebration for her in March, which was attended by the entire school, District administrators and her husband. During Teacher Appreciation Week, Dr. Johnson stopped by to recognize her accomplishment in front of the students that helped her win the award. #TeacherAppreciationWeek2024

School District U-46 celebrated 30 seniors at the annual Superintendent’s Scholarship reception and awards ceremony. These members of the Class of 2024 are first-generation college-bound students, and each will receive a $2,000 scholarship. Learn more about these impressive students in this video.

The Teacher Mentor Program celebrated its 2023-24 school year graduates this week, as well as their mentors at a two day, end of the year celebration. The Teacher Mentor Program allows new U-46 staff members to leverage the expertise of seasoned certified staff members with the goal of retaining high-quality teachers. The graduates have been a part of the two year program that offers the opportunity for engaging professional growth and a commitment which contributes to Districtwide student achievement.
