Guide for Forager - Progression (2024)

Welcome to the progression page of Forager. This is what is usually called the "Story Walkthrough" but as there is no story, and I can't really give straight directions like in other games, I will instead guide you through progression goals that you should attempt to reach in order to make efficient use of your time, and in the end, enjoy the game for it. This page will mainly direct you towards a goal that you should attempt to reach, along with possible side-goals to take note of along the way. I recommend that you take a look at the General Hints & Tips page if you have questions regarding why I advise you to do things, as well as some basic tips that will end up saving you time by planning ahead. As you get farther into the game, I will give less straight advice on your path to progress and instead give you a main goal to work on reaching.

no---------------------------------------------------------------------

Goal #1: Slime Pickaxe // Skills to unlock: Economy > Foraging > Industry > Sewing > Textiles

Tips: Make sure to make fishing traps anytime you can, to prevent yourself from being stuck without energy. Gather Materials, try to eat citrus, or as few berries as possible (only eat when your energy is completely empty). Cook whatever fish you get and let yourself take damage from running out of energy, then eat the cooked fish to be more efficient. You will probably want to start by making 4 gold bars to make coins after you unlock Economy. Then, alternate between coal, iron, and gold depending upon what resource you are lacking. It's a good idea to make coal at the start while keeping enough wood to make fishing traps.

Side Goals:

10 Fish Traps: (Made from berries and wood, place within your island’s area, make anytime you are able). Try to reach 10, that should be enough to sustain yourself on fish alone and remember to add fish to your toolbar along with other foods, excluding berries.

Main Goals:

Furnace: (Place near the top of your island, and don’t block yourself from any tiles)

Island (2/49): 30 Coins (At this point you should be level 4 with Magic, Combat, and Economy which will give you 40 coins, enough to buy your second island)

Note: If your Island has a puzzle and you can't figure it out, take a look at the Puzzles page of the walkthrough. If you receive a Spirit Orb make sure to check the General Hints & Tips page for an explanation or tips.

Forge: (Again place near the top of your island, and don’t block yourself from any tiles)

Island (3/49): Craft coins 4 times at the Smelter to reach 58 coins, allowing you to purchase your third island.

Sewing Station: Set it to craft infinite Thread, crafting leather whenever you can.

4 Bottled Torchbug: You should get an income of sand to make glass from your fishing traps, the Torchbugs themselves seem to appear more frequently at night and become more common depending on the number of islands you own.

Gear:

Small Backpack (2/6): 10 Thread, 10 Flowers

Slime Pickaxe (2/9): 15 Iron Ingot, 4 Bottled Torchbug, 20 Jelly

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Goal #2: Lighthouses // Skills to unlock: Storage > Gambling > Optics > Jewelry > Gathering > Fishing > Mining > Geology

Tips: Continue to gather materials and after unlocking Geology, make yourself two more furnaces to make use of near-infinite coal. You will want to set two of your furnaces to infinite iron/gold and the last one to make glass/brick. When you need steel, change whichever metal furnace is out of ore to make steel. As you go around gathering materials, use your shovel to dig up any dig spots, this is the best way to find gems at this point in the game, and they are very important because of amulets as well as a Quarry, which we will want to make soon enough.

Main Goals:

Vault(s): Store gems, stones and wood. If you are still having inventory space issues you can discard: Arrows, Wheat, Beets, Eggs, Meat, Citrus. Otherwise, consider making more vaults.

Lighthouses: You will ideally want to have around 32 Glass, 11 Steel and 64 Bricks for when you unlock Optics, so that you can make 2 Lighthouses straight away.

NOTE: Depending on your luck, you may have gotten an island that only filled up the center of its area. If so, pick up your fish traps and create lighthouses within the safe areas of that island and your connecting island. Lighthouses are 3x3 so do your best to fit them in as best as you can. It is extremely important to do this as efficiently as possible! After placing your lighthouses, recreate your fish traps around your lighthouses but do not place them where there is a 3x3 of water, save those spaces for lighthouses! If you haven't found this island don't worry, you will soon enough and then you can start making your lighthouses.

NOTE: Lighthouses MULTIPLY ALL RESOURCES that drop in their AoE. These multiplications stack! In order to make 1 Trillion coins, lighthouses are really the only way! After your 4th or 5th lighthouse in an area, you will start to really notice how important they are.

Gear:

Slime Amulet (1/8): 15 Iron, 2 Emeralds (After getting the materials unlock Jewelry! Gain 25% more resources per tier, up to +200%)

Gold Amulet (2/8): 25 Gold Ingot, 2 Topaz

Shovel (1/5): 20 Iron Ingot, 20 Wood (Dig up any small dirt circles on the ground for good materials)

Slime Gloves (1/8): 30 Jelly, 30 Thread, 15 Flowers (Increased attack speed by 10%)

Gear Notes: You may be tempted to make a sword, but don't. It's a waste of your iron at this point and really isn't worth making until after we have essentially infinite iron/gold.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Goal #3: Capitalism + Deposit // Skills to unlock: Bargain > Capitalism > Inscription > Prospecting > Deposit

Tips: After finding the small island, start to setup as many lighthouses as you can in order to increase your level up speed.

Side Goals:

Lighthouses: Start surrounding the small island.

Guide for Forager - Progression (4)

Main Goals:

Capitalism: Sell items that you have a lot of, excluding ores/ingots etc. (Fish, Seaweed, Jelly, Bones, etc...) To gain experience as well as coins. Make sure to keep 5 of each Gem, and then you can sell the rest in order to get a good amount of experience and coins.

Islands: Buy a few islands after selling resources. Right when I unlocked capitalism, I sold enough to reach ~900 coins and buy 6 islands or so.

Gear:

Slime Wallet (1/8): 30 Thread, 10 Gold Ingot (Coins are worth 25% more)

Skull Amulet (3/8): 25 Steel, 2 Amethyst

Moldy Book (1/8): 30 Thread, 5 Paper, 10 Flower (Xp gained increased by 15%)

Slimy Tome (2/8): 30 Glass, 5 Paper, 10 Jelly

Golden Gloves (2/8): 30 Glass, 20 Gold Ingot, 15 Wheat

In order to make a Quarry you will need 5 of each gem, and so you will naturally have unlocked:

  • Gemologist

Have one of each gem in your inventory

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Goal #4: Expansion // Skills to unlock: Architecture > Trade > Smelting > Artistry > Colonization > Logistics > Carpentry > Masonry > Manufacturing > Drilling > Automation > Craftsmanship > Supply > Magic > Combat > Renewal > Reagency > Faith > Farming

Tips: Expand your crafting setup to produce iron, gold, glass, brick and steel continuously. You should also decide to create more structures depending on your demands, If you are constantly running out of steel, you should increase your production. The same goes for any material.

Side Goals:

Lighthouses: Completely surround the small island.

Markets: Make a number markets in an area and make a habit of checking them (I recommend 6, if not more). At this point you should be able to make coins pretty easily by selling coal/stone from mining at your quarry next to your lighthouses.

Note: Make sure to buy all Sigils that you see in the Market, and make sure to check often! Other good things to buy are potions, scrolls, bottled insects, plastic, electronics, royal steel, royal clothing, fiberglass, and any unknown materials. Make sure to buy some amount of animal feed, it's really important in order to start producing Landfill reliably.

When you get your first piece of royal steel/clothing, you will get:

  • Royal

Gather royal steel or royal clothing

Guide for Forager - Progression (9)

    1 guideGuide for Forager - Progression (10)Guide for Forager - Progression (11)

Main Goals:

Quarry: Place it on a piece of empty land next to your lighthouses on the far side away from them. It will fill the entire island it is on with minerals periodically, but we want those minerals to be close to the lighthouses, so better for the quarry itself to be on the side far away from them. Because of this quarry you will basically not run out of iron/gold.

Coins: Feel free to sell almost all resources you get from your quarry excluding gems. This will give you a lot of experience as well as plenty of coins.

Islands: Continue collecting resources from within the range of your lighthouses and selling them in order to unlock all of the islands. Be careful as you begin to unlock the winter biome and go complete the giant crystal ASAP when you see it. At the same time, you should make some gear upgrades when possible. Also be sure to place 4 or 5 fish traps in each biome to gather the rare water archaeology items. Consider placing a lighthouse or two near them if there is space for it and you have the materials.

Poop: Hopefully you managed to acquire some animal feed, a wizard scroll as well as a mining/gathering scroll. If so, make your way to the lighthouse island and use either your mining or gathering scroll to spawn trees or rocks. Then use the wizard scroll to transform them into animals. Use all of your animal feed on a cow in order to receive a large amount of poop. Once you have unlocked farming, you should make a windmill and produce some more animal feed and then repeat the process until you have ~3k poop or so. Now, make infinite landfill using the flower press, but remember to save some poop to make animal feed in case you run out of poop at any point.

Gear:

Golden Pickaxe: 25 Gold Ingot, 5 Bottled Beetles, 20 Iron Ingot

Golden Wallet: 20 Glass, 5 Topaz

At some point you will unlock these:

Goal #5: Crafting Center // Skills to unlock: Engineering > Physics > Destruction > Spirituality > Summoning > Transmutation > Conjuration > Astrology > Spellbind > Lasers > Looting >>> Anything else...

Tips: Find a corner of the map that is not too constricted by buildings / npcs when making your crafting center.

Side Goals:

Banking Area: you will eventually need to collect 1 million coins from banks. To speed this process up now would be a great time to set up an area somewhere out of the way with 4 power plants surrounded by banks (1 used 24). Make sure the banks have a little space between them so you can actually click on them and pick up your coins.

Main Goals:

Preparation: Prepare your crafting location by filling all water with landfill (There is a possible bug with bridges that can interfere with a feat (we need all of them for an achievement). Since we don't want to have to tear this whole place up, make sure to use Landfill).

Power Plants: Create a 2x2 square of power plants. Then place the other production buildings around them as needed. I had 2 factories on the left and right sides and 4 furnaces, 2 sewing stations, 3 spirit forges, a forge and an inscription table along the top and bottom, but there is plenty of room for more in the power plant's AoE.

Oil Pump: After making your crafting center, setup a Oil Pump somewhere, and make sure you are constantly making Bottles which you will use to get Bottles of Oil.

Factories: You will need to make over 1000 electronics to complete all the upgrades, so whenever your factories don't have anything better to do, it's a good thing to have them working on that.

Once you get your last skill unlocked (and no rush on this, most of the remaining skills are simply nice to have and are only really needed for the achievement), you will get:

  • Skillful

    Learn every skill

Guide for Forager - Progression (21)

    2 guidesGuide for Forager - Progression (22)Guide for Forager - Progression (23)

Gear: At this point, you should start making every upgrade that you can.

Priorities: Amulet > Robotic Shovel (Guaranteed rare drops from shoveling) > Pickaxes > Other Shovels > Gloves > Everything else

Robotic Shovel: To make the Robotic Shovel you need 5 Void Roses which come from the void. You can reach the void through a void portal, which can be purchased from the market or created at a Sigil Maker.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Goal #6: Side Activities / Powering Up:

Tips: Make sure you check your markets and buy all Sigils and other rare resources! I am reminding you again because it is so important to get a number of Sigils in order to speed up our progress in the somewhat near future!

Side Goals: You should check your structures somewhat often to check what resources you need in order to upgrade your gear, taking the time to increase production if there is a bottleneck, or it is just slow. Make sure to gather a number of gems from your quarry to start.

Building Materials: In the future you are going to need a large amount of bricks and glass (as in 10k or more of each), so it may be a good idea to task at least one furnace in your crafting area with each.

Shrines: While you can put some shrines in the various biomes to use for excavations (as well as the other buffs), this isn't really necessary if you have the robotic shovel. I'd recommend instead placing a few within range of your power plants so they recharge more quickly.

Waterproof Progress: It is a great idea to work on filling all of the water with landfill at this point, before you start powering up using the Dark Altar. This is because when you will end up with a mass of droids that make it hard to see what you are doing. Therefore, I highly recommend that you work on filling most of the water on this before that point. Make sure to see if you can fill in any potential water spots underneath permanent buildings. I couldn't find out where I had missed until I finally checked under the fairy fountain. You do NOT need to fill in the water under bridges, lighthouses, and fish traps. See the Feats page for some other tips for working on this annoying feat.

Main Goals:

Side Activities: As your structures work to produce materials, start clearing any puzzles/quests that you haven't completed. By the time you complete them all you will have:

Dark Altar: After you reach max energy and max health, you will use all of your future spirit orbs. You will get a random selection of buffs. As stated in the General Tips, I would prioritize them as: Wrath, Terminator, Hermetics, Madness, Doom, Avarice, Gluttony, Challenge. You really only need 1-2 rows of hearts, so it's probably a good idea to use a number of yours to look for Wrath and Terminator, even before you have extra Spirit Orbs to re-max your health. While it isn't worth the hassle later on, if you are just using it a few times, you can save right before using it (it also auto-saves after you select each buff), and dashboard if you don't like either of the choices. Assuming you got a droid from the Dark Altar you will receive:

  • Robotic

    Activate a droid

Guide for Forager - Progression (61)

    1 guideGuide for Forager - Progression (62)Guide for Forager - Progression (63)

Slime Sigils: After sacrificing a few hearts, and assuming you have a decent sword (crystal or better should be good), use a Slime Sigil to summon a Slime King. It can deal damage to buildings it lands on, so it's best to fight it away from your structures. After defeating it you will receive 4 Spirit Orbs and a Legendary Gem as well as some other loot. Now you can go back to the Dark Altar to increase your damage some more... Use all of your Slime Sigils, and even consider making more at the Sigil Maker if you didn't have many (don't bother making other sigils, they drop the same amount of Spirit Orbs which is more important than Legendary Gems). Iif you have other sigils from the market, you can use them as you will need to defeat each boss at least once.

Dungeons: Clear the dungeons and make sure to find all of the Secret Rooms (Look on the Puzzles / Dungeons / Quests page). You should be able to clear these quite easily with your new friends and damage boost thanks to some small "sacrifices".

The Void: Assuming you haven't entered the void yet on your own initiative, you should do so now in order to get a few things. You need a large amount of Void Stone to make Void Steel, and 40 Kraken Eyes in total (10 for the sword and 30 for the gloves). At this point, you shouldn't focus too much on clearing levels, we will do that when we are much stronger. Try to get resource boost from a shrine to double the amount of resources you receive.

Structures: This is just a reminder that you should still be creating more structures to produce each material when needed. You will want a few Spirit Forges to make Void Steel, and eventually Cosmic Steel. Remember to increase the amount of structures as you stock up on the resources needed to make any higher tier materials (not just Spirit Forges). You should have at least 5 Factories at this point if not more. You should produce constant Fiberglass and Electronics at a decent rate as you will need a large amount of each of them. Note that you can find plastic by digging with the Robotic Shovel. Although you will probably want a factory or two making plastic.

Spirit Orbs: Now use your Skeleton Sigils and then lastly Beet Sigils, using your Spirit Orbs to speed up the process.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Goal #7: Void Master / Waiting:

Tips: Make sure you check your structures every so often so that you don't run out of anything you need.

Side Goals: You should check your structures somewhat often to check what resources you need in order to upgrade your gear, taking the time to increase production if there is a bottleneck, or it is just slow. Make sure to gather a number of gems from your quarry to start

Main Goals: Keep checking your markets for sigils and droids, and keep using the dark shrine to increase your power. Once you have 20-30 droids, and all your gear is as powered up as is possible, you are ready to make a run on the void. You will probably need 2-3 runs to get what you need, depending on how far you can get. You can refer to the resources page for an overview of how many Legendary Gems, Onyx Relics, and Toxic Sludge you need, which will likely be your main bottlenecks. If you get to level 30 you will get:

  • Void Master

    Reach Void level 30

Guide for Forager - Progression (64)

    1 guideGuide for Forager - Progression (65)Guide for Forager - Progression (66)

Gear:

Void Amulet: 10 Void Steel, 1 Kapala (Rare reward from dig spot in graveyard biome)

Void Pickaxe: 10 Void Steel, 5 Bottled Deathmoths (After making the Void Pickaxe, prioritize your sword from this point on. The cosmic sword makes pickaxes essentially useless (you can even consider getting the Void Sword first because the fireballs mine resources as well).

Void Sword: 15 Void Steel, 10 Kraken's Eye (Fished from the void, takes a while for a fish to bite so don't worry if you can't seem to find anything. Try to get resource boost from a shrine to save some time).

All other gear: It's worth upgrading all of your gear to the void level at this point, but you will need a large number of legendary gems and other items from the void to go further.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Goal #8: Final Upgrades / Nuclearization:

Side Goals: Now is a good time to finish off any remaining miscellaneous feats. The only ones you should have left are for collecting every tool and weapon, collecting every accessory, achieving every other feat, making 1 million coins using banks, making 1 trillion coins over all (and possible lesser versions of that feat) and a few related to nuclear tier gear and building upgrades.

Main Goals: Check on your bank area, collect the coins, hopefully you are close to one million by now. There isn't much else you can do other than waiting or building more banks. Now is the time to build a very large number of lighthouses. If you have any other lighthouses on the map you may want to destroy them now to lower your costs. Then, find a large area with no large obstruction. Ideally you need a square almost 2 islands by 2 islands. You can use the obliterator to clear out small quest and puzzle related obstacles as long as you are done with the quest. My layout looked like this, for a grand total of 44 lighthouses.

You could probably be okay with a few less, as long as you are willing to farm a little longer. Once your lighthouses are set up, simply summon skeletons in the center with the necro rod and let your droids kill them. You will likely be getting 10B or more every time, so it won't take long at all to get 1 trillion. Don't forget to sell the bones too, as those make up a big chunk of your cash. You can also use the greed potion to speed things up. This will give you:

  • Trillionaire

    Have 1,000,000,000,000 coins

Guide for Forager - Progression (68)

    2 guidesGuide for Forager - Progression (69)Guide for Forager - Progression (70)Guide for Forager - Progression (71)

    1 guideGuide for Forager - Progression (77)Guide for Forager - Progression (78)Guide for Forager - Progression (79)

Then start making 100 additional nuclear machinery. While you are waiting, you will need to build 100 structures to make nuclear. I recommend a mix of the following: Carpentry Station, Ballista, Flower Press, Forge, Furnace, Masonry Table, Sewing Station. Try to build a few of each type as that will minimize your resource usage. Unfortunately they all use bricks, except for the furnace, and bricks may be in short supply after your lighthouse construction. I built about 70 furnaces, and then a mix of the other types to make up the remaining 30. Once that is complete, go around and use nuclear machinery on them all. This should give you:
