In 2020, Chappell Roan was dropped by Atlantic Records at 22.So she became a babysitter. Four years later, she's a masterclass in success and personal branding.📅 When the pandemic started, Chappell was at the cusp of fameAgainst all odds, she'd left conservative small town Missouri...And was poised to become a pop icon. But that's not what happened.👀 Instead, her dreams were upended. Her label didn't recognize that Pink Pony Club was an absolute banger.(WTF happened there?)And they didn't want to release a "club song" when we were all stuck at home.So just like that, it all fell apart.☕ Chappell packed her bags, went back to Missouri, became a nanny, and moved in with her parents. But did she quit? No.Chappell kept creating. And she doubled down on everything that made her her.Her music got gayer. She dyed her hair fire engine red.And her creative direction went off the rails. (In the best way possible.)📆 4 years later, she's back on a meteoric rise...• Interviewed by Elton John• Openning for Olivia Rodrigo• Going viral at Coachella And making the kind of artistic and musical waves that will permeate the LGBTQIA2s+ community — and well beyond.💭 When it comes to success, the lesson here is simple...Perseverance.What looks like an explosive rise to some was a ten-year climb for Chappell.Even when she was brutally rejected...She held faith. And I think that willingness to take another swing plays an often undervalued role in our ability to find success in anything we do.Now, when it comes to personal branding, Chappell Roan is THE hand guide. Here are the lessons...1️⃣ Find out what makes you you and do more of that.Chappell is riding a Midwest train to West Hollywood gay bars faster than you can say "Femininomenon."Her breakout album?"Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess."She took her personal story and turned it into pop culture folklore.2️⃣ Be willing to alienate people who don't align with you (in this case, hom*ophobes) to find the people who do.Chappell Roan is unapologetic in her image.Outrageous costumes. Minimal clothing. Drag makeup. This probably isn't what "being you" looks like. But when you show up authentically, you will actively repel some people. That's fine.It will also turn you into a magnet for your ideal "fans."3️⃣ Have trust in what you love even if it's not what's trending right now.In an era of polished pop stars like Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo...(Both great.)Chappell Roan is outrageous, undone, and full of grit. Her image is not based on conventional beauty standards. She says things on stage that would make your Grandma faint. And she's unapologetically camp. But here's the thing...Trends come and go. Disruption gets remembered. So we shouldn't be afraid to highlight what doesn't "fit."⬇️And that's it for today, y'all!Happy pride.(Listening suggestions in the comments.)🏳️🌈

She just played here in Asheville, NC at Rabbit Rabbit which is a half block from my apartment. I regularly get to enjoy the performance and crowds through my open window, but Chappell's crowd blew away every other one I've heard in -years-. The absolute out pouring of love was unparalleled, and the entire town felt like it was electrified! The unbridled joy as the show let out and people were wandering under my window filled my soul with light. Thank you for sharing this story -- it deepens that sweet memory and turns it into something even more inspirational 🌠

I used LinkedIn to turn my business around (and damn near double my income). But those aren't even my favorite benefits...⏰ Here's the thing.I've been writing my whole life. And writing professionally for the better part of a decade. But before I started writing on LinkedIn, I hadn't really found MY voice. There are a lot of reasons for this but here's the biggest one...I wasn't putting in the reps.💪 Have I spent years writing upward of 1000 words most days?Yeah. But not as and for myself. (Not consistently, anyway.)And sounding like myself has been invaluable to me. And to my business. We connect with people we know, like, and trust. We buy from people we know, like, and trust. We listen to people we know, like, and trust.⬇ So, if you want to create a thriving online business, become a "thought leader," or build a value-aligned community, finding your voice is essential. It might be in video, through a blog, or on a podcast. (I'm not pretentious enough to think that writing is more noble than Tiktok.)But I'm a pretty strong believer that we have to put in the reps, regardless.Your personal brand is built. It doesn't just materialize. And the act of creation can help you figure out who you are in business... And in life.Bottom line — I can't recommend it enough.📢 So, here's my advice...Pick your platform.(Whatever feels authentic and accessible to you.)Take risks, dig deep, and practice often.(Maybe even daily to start.)You might be surprised by how much you learn about yourself. And I'm willing to bet you'll love where ever that knowledge takes you.🚀 📸 A picture of my face because when you see me, you feel like you know me.

I do this almost every day. It's one of the most powerful habits I've built for my business, my peace of mind, and my productivity.Don't get me wrong...Going through a thousand plus emails to clean out my inbox was a nightmare.(So were the messages I sent when I was 20.)But inbox zero...There are few things that feel quite this satisfying.Okay... Pizza, hot springs, clean sheets, fresh donuts, a million dollar lottery win, world peace... but you get the point. This is nice and it makes me feel more calm and effective so I can enjoy my job more (and probably make more money). Can't recommend it enough, honestly.🎤 Do you do this? Why or why not?

Saw another post this week (from a woman) that criticized specifically women for two core behaviours...1. Talking about their high income (again?!) 2. And selling courses without "enough" of a track recordAnd I'm not gunna lie...It totally got my back up.📢 But I do want to be clear in saying this... There's a huge part of this argument that I totally understand and agree with.Specifically, the poster was annoyed with designers who are selling courses without substantial evidence of their work or their success in their field.Of course, some people do this — across all creative fields. And I do believe that this can be a problem.👀 What I don't get is this woman's desire to publicly lambaste other women for sh*t that men also do.In fact...I would hope that we'd look at other women MORE charitably given the context. Why?Because we have all of these factors working against us...• The ongoing pay gap• A more significant presence of sexual harassment• Inequitable expectations around parenthood and the home• And of course, a historical lack of access to money and jobs⬇ Now, don't get me wrong. Most women these days root each other on.Most women these days are unbelievably supportive. And I wouldn't have a career today without the contributions of "most women."💗 The poster is an outlier. But when I see sh*t like this, I get unbelievably squirmy.Probably because it feels like there's a knife in my back.😂 We've been pitted against each other for so long.I should know. Not all that long ago, I was the worst "pick-me girl" you ever did meet. But surely we've grown out of this entirely?!💰 We have to fight that much harder for every dollar.(And don't even get me started on how this is impacted if a person is also disabled, LGBTQIA2s+, BIPOC, or living in a "bigger" body.)So when it comes to money, success, and business...I would hope that we can all take all of this into account. And be charitable in our thinking. But if we can't do that...I'd hope that we'd at least avoid being uniquely critical of other women for something that everybody and their dog is doing.Just sayin'.🤷🏻♀️Note: A "smaller" creator made this post but multiple mammoth creators (and two of the most successful designers around) liked and commented on it so I really feel called to say something here.Another Important Note: My language in this video is binary because the original post is binary. But there are, of course, more than 2 genders — and not everyone has one at all. 😊🏳️🌈➡️ I just realized my captions say “chakra good” where they should say “track record” and that’s really on me.(Always edit robots.)

This month, Harrison Butker effectively told women they belong in the kitchen. He also told the LGBTQIA2s+ community that Pride Month is a sin.YIKES.😬 Now listen...I don't know who this guy is.(Just kidding.)(He's on the same team as Taylor Swift's boyfriend.) (I think they play tennis.) (Not 100% sure but reporters are saying he's "a kicker.")(That WOULD be tennis, right?!)(Maybe Zendaya can tell me.)😏 Anyway...This sh*t would piss me off regardless. But I'm also very much queer and cancer took my uterus. (Unrelated factoids but both relevant in this context.)As you can probably imagine, my "female rage" is palpable.⬇ And of course, I'm not alone.Harrison pissed a lot of people off.Unfortunately, the Kelce brothers* seem pretty chill about the whole situation. Here's a statement from Travis...“I cherish him as a teammate. I think Pat (Mahomes) said it best where he is every bit of a great person and a great teammate."Jason, on the other hand, mentioned that his wife was "a little bit frustrated."He then made a joke about her getting back in the kitchen. And I've got to be honest...This all makes me want to set my hair on fire.😡 Bigotry stops when good people stop excusing it.I am not religious but I am absolutely supportive of all kinds of religions.I think spirituality is a beautiful thing. (I envy it, actually.)What I don't appreciate is when someone props themselves up on a soapbox they call faith to spew hatred…When someone calls Pride Month a sin and cries "hate" and religious discrimination when he's challenged on it.And when it comes to the Kelce brothers, make no mistake...It is their responsibility to openly and actively contest this sh*t. (Great power. Great responsibility.) 📢 When we are in a position of privilege, we have the onus to create change.White people need to speak up about racism.Straight people need to challenge hom*ophobia.Ablebodied people need to engage with ableism.Cis people need to fight back against transphobia. And men in positions of power need to defy sexism.(What you say in the locker room matters. A lot.)👀No "great person" would condemn people based on... • Who they love• How they identify• Or the way they were bornBottom line — Butker needs to keep his opinions to himself. And the Kelce brothers* have a responsibility to do more than cite his right to free speech, make sexist jokes, and tell us what a great guy he is.🏳️🌈 * Taylor Swift's boyfriend and Taylor Swift's boyfriend's brother.📸 Just watching the partner of one of the most successful women on Earth describe an open hom*ophobe and wildly sexist human as "a great person." (If that doesn't make you wanna "leap from the gallows," IDK what will.)

I don’t really believe in “sales calls.”And I think this language can become an issue for some freelancers.😬 Now, don’t get me wrong…I do have extensive experience in sales.I do take plenty of calls with prospects. And selling is part of what I do, sure.(I’m also not here to undermine the amazing work of the many talented creators who use this language.)(We should of course still listen to people who are experts in sales.)🤔 So, WTF is my issue here?!Honestly, I think the idea of “sales” can get tangled up with desperation for a lot of us.I also think that when we approach a call with the idea that we’re selling, we can come off pushy, needy, or self involved. So while we certainly CAN call these touchpoints “sales calls,” I don’t usually think of them that way.💭 Instead, I look at these calls as…• A chance to assess fit• A business chemistry check• And an opportunity to get to know my clientA sale might happen. (And it often does.)😉 But at the end of the day, we’re just two humans…Sitting in front of our computers…Looking for red flags…And (sometimes) making a zero-pressure deal. So… Can we call our next “sales call” a vibe check instead?Just putting it out there.😏 🎤 How do you feel when you hear the word "selling" or "sales?" 📸 My exact level of excitement when I think about pressuring my prospects into literally anything.

My nail tech asked me about my job yesterday. And my response felt just as good as it always does."I'm self employed," I told her.🥲And just like it always does, a smile spread across my face. I'm tearing up right now just thinking about it, TBH.And this entire phenomenon will never get old for me.😁 It was a long winding road to this destination. All of my past experiences with the working world told me one thing...You're going to do this for the rest of your life, yes. And you absolutely hate it.🧟♀️ This made me feel an overwhelming darkness deep down inside that seemed impossible to shake.I've been sexually harassed at work.I've been aggressively body shamed by colleagues.I've flown off the rails and into substance abuse in certain roles. And I've worked jobs with toxic leaders with totally sh*t boundaries.I always seemed to find myself in the same place eventually...Staring down a tunnel of a life that I didn't feel I wanted.A very dismal place to be.😔 So, am I waking up every day now and living the f**king dream?Kind of. But not entirely. Here's what my real life looks like...• I sometimes do "boring" jobs• Work often bleeds into every corner of my mind• And I work at a desk — not on the beach (womp womp)Sometimes, I feel overwhelmed.Sometimes, my work can feel like drudgery. But I'm so f**king grateful nonetheless.☀ Because my life also looks like this...• I feel incredibly proud of what I've accomplished• My A-grade clients put a smile on my face every damn day• And a lot of the work I do is stuff I am super duper excited aboutAlso, my boss is (usually) exceptionally good to me.(She's never asked me to sit in her lap or called me "saddlebags," anyway.)(WTF is wrong with people. Seriously.)😬 I also know that not everyone can upend and rethink their careers in this way.But if you're feeling at all like I did once...And you have the privilege of exploring a new path...I'm 100% cheering you on.Yes, my job is a job. It's not perfect. But it's perfect(ish) for me.And that's well worth celebrating.I really hope you feel the same. But if you're not quite there yet... I hope you're celebrating a win or two this week.🌻 🎤 Feeling some Thursday positivity. Pop a small and big win of your current career path below — no matter what you've been doing.🔔 I'm Emily. I talk about running a freelance biz, building a personal brand, and the sh*t I've learned from a messy life lived.
